Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a guide will meet you and escort you to your hotel for check-in, dinner, and an overnight stay. If time permits, you may explore the vibrant city of Nairobi, which offers a range of attractions, including local food, art, nature, and wildlife. Some popular places are Nairobi National Park, Kenyatta Convention Centre (rooftop walkway), Nairobi National Museum, David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Centre. These attractions offer unique experiences that portray Kenya's cultural and natural heritage.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is located about 260 km (a 5-hour drive) southwest of Nairobi. On the day of your visit, you will have breakfast at your hotel before meeting your guide in the morning. You will then start your journey to Maasai Mara, arriving late in the morning. After checking in at the lodge, you will have lunch and embark on your first game drive to explore the wildlife.

Maasai Mara is situated in the Rift Valley and is contiguous with Tanzania's Serengeti National Park. The protected area has golden grasslands dotted with acacia, riverine forests along the Mara and Talek rivers, rock kopjes, and rolling hills. The region is famous for harbouring the Big Five African mammals, including elephants, buffalo, rhinos, leopards, and lions. Mara is also known for hosting the wildebeest migration, which occurs annually between July and October during the dry season. Over 1.5 million wildebeests and hundreds of thousands of gazelles, zebras, and elands migrate for greener pastures and water. Rainfall patterns influence the migration in East Africa. The main highlight in Masai Mara is witnessing the wildebeest crossing of the Mara and Talek rivers as animals struggle through crocodile-infested rivers and predators such as cheetahs, lions, leopards, hyenas, and African wild dogs hunt prey. You will have dinner and stay overnight at the lodge.

Spending the entire day at the park provides an opportunity to experience wildlife viewing with multiple game drives. Additionally, you have the option to do a hot air balloon safari. The flexible schedule allows you to decide how much time to allocate to activities and meals. For example, to witness the wildebeest crossing at the Mara or Talek rivers, you may need to carry a packed lunch and camp at a particular lookout point such as Kaburu. Alternatively, you can enjoy returning to the lodge for lunch. Masai Mara's game drives offer a glimpse of the "Big Five" animals: wildebeests, birds, big cats, and antelopes. You can also enjoy breathtaking scenery, sunrises and sunsets from the lookout points. The day concludes with dinner and an overnight stay. Those interested in night game drives can visit a conservancy at an additional cost.

A walking safari might be the perfect option if you want to immerse yourself fully in the African bush. This safari is done early in the morning and lasts 2-3 hours. You will be accompanied by a ranger who will guide you through the bush, allowing you to experience the sights and sounds up close. Once the safari is over, you can return to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. You can visit the Maasai community in the late afternoon (between 4 pm and 5 pm) to learn about their culture and way of life. The Maasai people were traditionally nomadic pastoralists who grazed their cattle in what is now a protected area. However, they now live outside the protected area and have been encouraged by the Kenyan government to embrace arts, crafts, and cultural experiences as alternative income sources. By visiting the Maasai community, you will be promoting responsible tourism.

After breakfast, you will leave Maasai Mara and return to Nairobi, the capital city, for your flight departure, marking the end of your 5-Day Kenya Big Migration Safari Tour.
