Upon arrival at Kigali airport, one of our tour guides will be waiting for you, holding a placard with your name. The tour guide will transfer you to your hotel if you need to stay in Kigali overnight. Otherwise, you can proceed directly to Akagera National Park. You will spend the night inside the park and experience the wildlife at night.
You will start early today as you join your ranger for a safari into Akagera National Park. You will be travelling in an open vehicle. You will spend half a day spotting a variety of wild animals such as elephants, buffalos, lions, Masai giraffes, gazelles, impala, baboons, oribi, Butchel’s zebra, topi, bush baby, leopard, and bushbuck. After the game drive, you will return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, you will take a boat trip along Lake Ihema, where you can see water animals like crocodiles and hippos. You will also enjoy watching birds, with over 525 species identified. Unique species, such as shoe-billed stocks and papyrus gonolek, can be encountered. Endemics include the jacanas, ibis, sandpipers, and herons.
After the boat trip, you will return to your lodge for dinner and to reflect on and discuss the day's sightings.
Start your day with an early morning drive after breakfast. Then, head back to Kigali and continue to Volcanoes National Park in the north for an unparalleled mountain gorilla tracking experience. Check in at either Mountain Gorilla's Nest or Kinigi Guest House near Kinigi station, the park headquarters, and enjoy lunch. Afterwards, walk through nearby forests or crater lakes for scenic views, bird watching, and photography. Finally, enjoy dinner and spend the night at the booked accommodation.
Breakfast will be served at 7:00 am local time at the lodge. You will have 30 minutes to enjoy your meal before heading to the nearby park headquarters. There, a park ranger will brief you on how to carry out gorilla tracking. Be prepared for a challenging hike on slippery and muddy Volcanoes slopes with nettles. However, the encounter with mountain gorillas will make it all worth it. You can observe and photograph these magnificent creatures for at least an hour.
In the evening, you can visit the panoramic twin volcanic lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Afterwards, return to your lodge for dinner and enjoy some folk tales at the fireplace.
Embark on a half-day hike to Mt Bisoke, topped with a beautiful crater lake. Take photos and connect to Kigali International Airport for your flight home after an early morning breakfast.
