Budongo Forest is a lush and expansive tropical rainforest located in northwest Uganda. Covering an area of approximately 825 square kilometers, it is one of the largest and most biodiverse forests in East Africa. The forest is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, including over 360 species of birds, 290 species of butterflies, and 24 species of mammals. It is also known for its population of chimpanzees, which are a popular attraction for visitors. With its stunning natural beauty and rich ecological diversity, Budongo Forest is a true gem of Uganda and a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
1. Chimpanzee tracking: Budongo Forest is home to over 800 chimpanzees, making it one of the best places in the world to track these intelligent primates. Guided tours are available, and you can observe the chimpanzees in their natural habitat.
2. Birdwatching: Budongo Forest is a birdwatcher's paradise, with over 360 bird species found in the forest. Some of the species you can spot include the African dwarf kingfisher, the chocolate-backed kingfisher, and the white-thighed hornbill.
3. Hiking: The forest is filled with hiking trails that offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. You can explore the forest on foot and see some of the most beautiful natural wonders in Uganda.
4. Nature walks: For a more relaxed experience, you can take a nature walk through the forest. Along the way, you will learn about the different plants and animals that call the forest home.

The best time to visit Budongo Forest is during the dry season from December to February and from June to August. The weather is dry and sunny, making it easier to traverse the forest trails and spot wildlife. However, if you're interested in bird watching, the rainy season (March to May and September to November) may be the best time to visit.
Budongo Forest is located in the northwestern part of Uganda, specifically in the Masindi district. The forest can be accessed through the Kaniyo Pabidi Ecotourism site, which is located about 8 kilometres from Masindi. You can also drive from Kampala to Masindi or take a domestic flight to Pakuba Airstrip followed by a car drive to Masindi.
