Lake Mburo National Park is a perfect destination to start or end your Uganda safari, especially on a gorilla trekking safari to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga National Park. It is one park in Uganda near Kampala, the capital city. This park is most famous for its unmatched wildlife viewing experiences and features breathtaking landscapes.
Lake Mburo National Park is situated in Kiruhura, Western Uganda, and the surrounding districts include Isingiro, Lyantode and Mbarara. In 1933, the present Lake Mburo National Park was a Controlled Hunting Area, and in 1983, it was recognized as a Wildlife Reserve extending to cover a land area of 370 sq. km. It is the most accessible park from the city center, about 4 to 5 hours’ drive.
Lake Mburo National Park is a compact park with many wildlife species. The park supports an estimated population of 68 mammal species, reptiles, 350 bird species and more that survive within its main habitats, including the riparian woodland, papyrus swamps, savannas and Lakes. The different animal species to be spotted include Defassa waterbucks, impalas, Bohor reedbucks, sitatungas, bushbucks, topis, elands, crocodiles, hippos, zebras, giraffes, leopards, jackals, genet, buffaloes, oribis, white-tailed mongoose and hyenas.
Lake Mburo National Park (LMNP) is a rich birding destination, home to 350 species of birds. These include the shoebill stork, long-tailed cisticolas, brown-chested wattled plovers, kingfishers, rufous bellied herons, Carruthers cisticolas, red-shouldered tit, African fish eagles, coqui francolins, bare-faced-go-away bird, Abyssinian ground hornbills, Nubian woodpeckers, yellow-billed ducks, papyrus yellow warblers,
Ross’s turacos, crowned cranes, saddle-billed storks, African fin foot, green hood hoopoes, grey woodpeckers, black-bellied bustard, white-winged barbet, yellow-breasted apalis, shining blue kingfishers, and more. The best bird-watching areas in Lake Mburo National Park include swampy valleys, Miriti, Lubanga Forest, Salt Licks and more.
Lake Mburo National Park’s altitude ranges from 1219 meters to 1828 meters. It has an extended network of wetlands and many beautiful lakes, including Lake Mburo, where it derives its name.
Game drives: A game drive is the leading safari experience tourists can enjoy while on a safari in Lake Mburo National Park. You get to see a variety of wildlife and birds. The park offers excellent morning, afternoon and night game drives. Lake Mburo NP is an excellent travel destination, attracting visitors globally at any time of the year. But the best time to travel for a trip holiday is during the dry season, which is from June, July, August & September, December, January to February. The wet/rainy season (March-May/October-November) is also a particular season for tourists to make their travel dreams come true.

The distance from Kampala to Lake Mburo National Park is about 240 km, about a 4- to 5-hour drive. Before you get dropped off at your lodge for evening relaxation, you will make a stopover at the Equator crossing or Mpambire Drum Makers.
By air, the tour operator on the ground can arrange a fly-in tour and flights set off from Entebbe Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Mbarara Airstrip.
