Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi is one of the most beautiful places in Uganda and East Africa, offering unmatched scenic viewing experiences. This freshwater lake is found in the Kigezi Highlands in Southwestern Uganda, and overall, it is the country’s deepest lake in Africa; it features in the 2nd position.

Lake Bunyonyi is most famous as a place of many little birds, and the lake has some interesting avifaunal species to be spotted. This lake is 44 meters and 900 meters deep, rising at an elevation of 1962 meters. Its width area measures between 7km and 25km. Within Lake Bunyonyi alone, 29 islands are dotted, making it a spectacular area for scenic viewing.

Lake Bunyonyi is one of the main attractions in Southwestern Uganda and lies near the Rwanda border. It is reachable 53 kilometers away from Kabale and 48 km from Kisoro. This scenic feature is captured on the 2000 Ugandan shilling note, and it is amazingly an ideal honeymoon destination if you are looking for a place to escape bustling city life.

What to do in Lake Bunyonyi

Kahunye Island: Kahunye Island is a unique island of Lake Bunyonyi, and it is exceptional because it has some wildlife. The island features interesting animal species such as waterbucks, Uganda Kobs, zebras, DeBrazza monkeys, and birds. While at Kahunye, tourists can connect up to the Echuya Forest.

Bird watching: Lake Bunyonyi features a diversity of unique birds totalling up to 200. The birds that you may come across include African harrier hawks, pied wagtails, streaky seed eaters, weaver birds, grey crowned cranes, speckled mousebirds, common stone chat, fan-tailed widow birds, slender-billed babblers, and others.

Canoe ride: Canoeing or boating is a must-do experience on a tour of Lake Bunyonyi. You will feel like riding on the lake water using a dugout canoe heading to one of the islands. You will have a good time as you explore and experience the spectacular Bunyonyi while enjoying the surrounding landscapes.

Swimming: For good swimmers, Lake Bunyonyi is a place worth considering to cool off after a long day of gorilla trekking in Bwindi or a community walk. This lake is free of bilharzia, crocodiles, and hippos. When swimming, keen attention must be paid to the depth of the lake, considering it is the second deepest in Africa.

Blacksmith site visit: On the Lake Bunyonyi tour, visiting the renowned skilful Abaheesi people should be a must-do. Learn the unique ways and practices these people use for melting metals to create knives, machetes, hoes, souvenirs and more. Another area of interest is the Bakiga Cultural Museum, launched in 2002.

Akampene (Punishment Island): There is something special about the Punishment Island: its distinct history, which you shouldn’t miss exploring. It was on this island where the unmarried girls who became pregnant were abandoned with no food, and if lucky, they were rescued by poor young men. This ancient practice stopped in the 20th century, and those who were culprits still exist and can testify. Other islands to visit include Bwama and Sharp’s Islands.

How to go to Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi is suitably lying in the Kigezi region, and getting there is possible from Kampala Entebbe or Kigali through the Katuna border. From Kampala city via the Masaka-Mbarara route, you require at least 8 hours to drive and connecting from Kigali means you will take 4-5 hours.
