Jinja

Jinja is a newly created city and district in Busoga Sub-region. It is one of Uganda’s biggest towns/cities and is located on the Eastern side of the country. From Kampala to Jinja city, it is about 81 km and en route; there are opportunities to make a stopover at Ssezibwa Waterfalls and Mabira Forest.

Jinja lies on the Northern shores of Lake Victoria in close proximity to the Source of the Nile River. It lies at an altitude of 1204 meters. This is one of the cities that were founded by the British settlers in 1901. Its plan dates back to 1948, and it was designed by Ernst May, the German Architect and urban planner. Ernst was the brain behind the design of Kampala city with neighbourhood units. The estates were set up for the ruling elite in most parts outside the city centre. This resulted in slum clearance and displacement of over 1000 residents in the 1950s.

The construction of the Owen Falls Dam in 1954 submerged the Ripon Falls. During the construction, most of the flat rocks disappeared, and the area was most formerly popular as ‘the stone.’ Jinja is a name derived from the Luganda word “Mayinja.” The actual description of what then Jinja appeared exists in John Hanning Speke’s notes. He was the first European to set eyes on the Source of the Nile.

Jinja depends on a number of income-generating activities. It is Uganda’s 2nd biggest city with many factories. It is near the electric power station Owen Falls Dam and other newly built dams. Some of the renowned factories include Kakira Sugar Works (KSW), which is part of the Madhvani Group of companies. Bidco International Oil Refining Company, Nile Breweries Ltd, Kiira Motors Corporation, etc.
